The Cocora Valley hike is a popular hiking experience for travellers in Colombia. Hikers depart from the beautiful popular coffee town of Salento. It is a long hike through farmland, cloud forest and evergreen woodland, and end at the beautiful Cocora Valley. This valey is home to hundreds of examples of the tallest palm trees in the world, at up to 60 metres in height. It’s not an expert-level hike, but you’ll need to be averest fit and bring plenty of water.
From the main square of Salento, you will find colorful Jeeps waiting for passengers. The Jeeps leave once per hour for about 3.600 pesos. You can also organize a private trip — team up with other tourists who don’t want to wait — for a total of 31.000 pesos.
The Jeeps take about 25 minutes to arrive to Cocora. From the parking lot you will see a number of little shops, people offering horse rides, and of course the nearby palm trees.
The full loop with a visit to Acaime (the hummingbird house) is about 12,5 kilometers and will take 5-6 hours in total depending on conditions and how often you stop to take in the scenery.
